Origin story

Mpp’s Beginning

Early in the startup days of a company called CS*, they knew they had a truly revolutionary and disruptive technology. But, as a startup, they also had little money.

They sought out the best IP attorney in their domain, Tim Markison of Garlick & Markison. He had a unique approach to patent strategy that focused on creating a patent portfolio that provided a superior patent position with respect to any competitor, regardless of the competitor’s size.

CS engaged Garlick & Markison to implement Markison’s patent strategy. A few years later, that decision paid handsomely. Despite having less than $60 million in annual revenue, CS was acquired by Large Co.* for just under $1.4 billion. That’s 23.3X of annual revenue!

Why so much money for a small company? The answer is simple, it was the patent portfolio.

Large Co. attributed $1 billion of the $1.4 billion to goodwill, which was almost exclusively CS’ patent portfolio. In fact, Large Co. attorneys privately said that without the patents, Large Co. wouldn’t have made an offer.

Early investor in CS, Jim Dugan of OCA Ventures, and Tim Markison knew they had a formula for success that could change the way the industry viewed and executed patent strategy. They formed MPP (Markison Patent Portal) to productize the process using AI software and a proprietary
architecture to scale Tim’s methodology to startups, large companies, tech transfer offices, and the IP industry as a whole.
