Origin story

Mpp’s Beginning

Early in the startup days of a company called CleverSafe, the entrepreneurs knew they had a truly revolutionary and disruptive technology. But, as a startup, they also had very little money. 

 

They sought out the best IP attorney in their domain, Tim Markison of Garlik & Markison. He had a unique approach to patent strategy that focused on complete ownership at the right cost. Together they created a patent portfolio that ensured CleverSafe had a superior IP position to any competitor entering the market.

 

Several years later, the company was still small – under $60 million in annual revenue —  when IBM decided to buy CleverSafe. The price IBM paid? Just under $1.4 billion. 

Why so much money for such a small company?

 

IBM attributed $1 billion of the valuation to intangible assets, namely the patent portfolio. In fact, privately IBM attorneys said that without the patents, IBM wouldn’t have made an offer.

 

Early investor in CleverSafe, Jim Dugan of OCA Ventures, and Tim Markison knew they had a formula for success that could change the way the industry viewed and executed patent strategy. They formed MPP (Markison Patent Portal) to productize the process using AI software and a proprietary architecture to scale Tim’s methodology to startups, large companies, tech transfer offices, and the IP industry as a whole.
